Rochard Mother and Baby Hippo Limoges Box in Water

Half-submerged and perfectly content, a mother hippo keeps her baby close in the cool water. Rochard captured the pair in a Limoges box, with every ripple and wrinkle painted by hand in Limoges, France.

Wallowing Together

Hippos spend most of the day in rivers and lakes, staying cool while their calves rest beside them, and mothers are fiercely protective of their young. Rochard's design shows that bond with a gentle touch. The water scene gives the piece a sense of place, as if you were looking out over an African riverbank.
