Rose Limoges Boxes
Rose Limoges boxes show off the favorite subject of the porcelain painter, the flower every decorator learns first and few ever tire of. Here roses bloom on hearts, eggs, handbags, teapots, needle cases and perfume vials, and sometimes the rose is the box itself, from a small rosebud on its stem to a single pink stem. Each is Hand-Painted porcelain from Limoges, France, finished with a hinged lid.
The court of Versailles left its mark on this group. Madame de Pompadour roses wrap a scalloped box and a round one, Sevres style roses circle a pair of swans and a hat with a smaller hat inside, and an antique needlepoint pattern repeats in blue. Simpler shapes let the brushwork speak, with flat blue and white rectangles, a long pink oval and a pale blue Rochard square carrying a single rose and gold. Roses carry the message when words run short. There is a red Rochard rose with a gold stem and love heart, a Je T'aime heart, a pink rose for Mother's Day, and a table for two set with yellow roses and champagne. Buy one for a wife on an anniversary, for a mother on her day, or for the daughter who keeps her rings in something pretty. Unlike the dozen from the florist, these will still be blooming on the dresser next year.
