Flat Blue Limoges Box with a Painted Rose

Low, flat and finished in blue, this porcelain box carries a single rose as its quiet decoration. It is a hand-painted Limoges box made in Limoges, France, with a slim profile that tucks easily between taller pieces.

One Rose, Softly Said

A single rose has always said more than a full bouquet, and the painter let this one stand alone against the blue ground. The effect is calm and classic, the kind of design that suits any room in the house.

Slim Lines on the Nightstand

• Porcelain painted by hand in Limoges, France
• Belongs in a rose, blue or traditional box collection
• Rests neatly on a nightstand, a dressing table or a narrow shelf

Kaolin, Fire and Brush

Limoges became a porcelain town after fine white kaolin clay was found near Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche in 1768, and the city has been firing it ever since. Many boxes, like this one, are painted by hand once the white porcelain has been fired. A blue rose box makes a gentle present for a bride, a mother on her birthday or a friend who grows roses each June.
