Hellebore Flowers on Cobalt Blue Round Limoges Box

Hellebore blossoms stand out against a deep cobalt blue on this round porcelain box. It was hand-painted in Limoges, France, a classic Limoges box with a quiet tie to the late winter garden.

The Christmas Rose in Bloom

Hellebores are often called Christmas roses or Lenten roses because they flower in the cold months when little else does. Gardeners prize them for their nodding blooms and for their toughness, opening even through frost and snow.

Gifts for the Gardener

Anyone who grows hellebores along a shady path will recognize the flower at once. It makes a thoughtful present for a master gardener, a garden club friend, or someone celebrating a birthday in January, February or March. Set it on a windowsill that looks out on the winter garden, or in a cabinet of deep blue pieces where the cobalt ground can shine. It also brightens a holiday table, given its Christmas rose nickname.
