Flat Round Pink Limoges Box with Roses

Roses bloom across the lid of this flat round box, set against a soft pink ground that suits their romantic mood. It is a hand-painted Limoges box, its roses painted by hand in Limoges, France.

A Rose Garden on the Lid

The low, flat round shape turns the lid into a little canvas, and roses are a natural subject for it. Pink on pink gives the whole piece a soft, harmonious look, like petals scattered on a silk scarf.

A Pocket Companion Reborn

Small porcelain boxes became fashionable in eighteenth-century France, where they held snuff, pills and beauty patches. Today a rose covered box like this one carries that old idea of a pretty pocket companion into a modern bedroom or dressing room.

Ways to Say It With Roses

• A Valentine's Day present that will outlast a bouquet
• An anniversary nod for a couple who married in June, the month of the rose
• A thank-you for a gardener who tends prize roses

Keep it on a nightstand, in a jewelry drawer or on a vanity tray, where its blooms stay fresh all year.
