Rochard Small Panda Limoges Box on a Round Base

Round-bodied and calm, a small panda settles onto a round base in this little Rochard box. It is hand-painted porcelain from Limoges, France, and the black and white coat makes it one of the easiest animals to recognize on any shelf.

Bamboo Forest Calm

The giant panda has become a worldwide symbol of gentle wildlife, and this piece captures that mood in miniature. Rochard sets the bear on a tidy base that also forms the box, keeping the outline compact and steady. Because the painting is done by hand, the dark patches and markings vary slightly from one example to the next.

Little Bear, Big Following

Panda fans tend to collect widely, from plush to prints, and a porcelain box gives that habit a more grown-up outlet. It also sits comfortably with other bears, from teddy bears to polar bears, or with a group of animals from China and the rest of Asia.

Small Spaces, Good Company

• A Rochard piece in the small size
• Fits a nightstand, a desk corner or a busy curio shelf
• A gentle surprise for a zoo member, a traveler home from Chengdu or a friend who adores pandas

Pair it with a bamboo plant on a sunny sill and the scene almost sets itself.
