Rochard Mouse Asleep on Cheese Limoges Box

A little mouse has fallen fast asleep on a piece of cheese in this Rochard Limoges box, clearly too full to take another bite. It is hand-painted in Limoges, France, and it makes for one of the coziest scenes on the shelf.

Forty Winks After the Feast

Mice and cheese have gone together in stories and cartoons for generations, and this piece captures the happy ending after the feast. Rochard paints each one by hand, so the mouse and its cheesy bed vary slightly from box to box.

Sweet Dreams and Smiles

This piece makes a charming present for a cheese lover, a fromager opening a new shop, or a friend who always naps after Sunday dinner. It also suits anyone who collects mice, a new grandparent who loves nursery-tale scenes, or a wine and cheese party host. Set it on a kitchen shelf beside the cheese board, on a bedside table, or on a bookshelf where its sleepy charm can be enjoyed.

A Snuff Box Tradition

Small porcelain boxes were the fashion in eighteenth-century France, where they held snuff, pills and beauty patches. Limoges painters still carry the tradition on with playful pieces like this one.
