Small Teddy Bear on an Oval Limoges Box

A small teddy bear rests on top of an oval porcelain box, settled in as if it had found the perfect spot for a nap. It is porcelain rather than plush, with the fur and face hand-painted in Limoges, France.

Room to Stretch Out

The oval base gives this bear a little more room than the round version, and the longer shape makes it easy to spot on a crowded shelf. Each bear is painted by hand, so the expression and shading of the fur vary from piece to piece.

Bears of a Feather

• Hand-painted porcelain from Limoges, France
• Fits a teddy bear, baby or nursery collection
• Pairs with the round teddy bear box and other bear pieces

A Keepsake to Grow Into

This bear makes a lasting present for a baby shower, a christening or a first birthday, and it stays on the shelf long after the stuffed animals are packed away. Grandparents often choose it to welcome a new grandbaby, and longtime teddy bear collectors like to add it beside their antique bears. It also suits a get-well wish for a friend who needs a bit of comfort.

Many Limoges boxes are painted by hand after the white porcelain is fired and fitted with metal mounts by hand, which gives a simple subject like this one a careful finish.
