Trumpet in Case Limoges Box

A trumpet resting in its open case is the subject of this porcelain box, as if the player has just stepped away between sets. Hand-painted in Limoges, France, it is a Limoges box that honors the bright voice of the brass section.

Between Sets

There is something evocative about an instrument laid in its case, the gig not quite over. The trumpet's flared bell and curving tubing make a handsome shape, and cradled in a case they suggest a musician who takes good care of the horn.

Who Hears the Call

Trumpet players, band directors and jazz fans will feel at home with this one. It is a fitting present after a recital or a first chair audition, a graduation from a music program, or a retirement send-off for a longtime band teacher.

Painted After the Fire

Limoges boxes are shaped in white porcelain, fired, then painted by hand, with their metal mounts fitted by hand as well. That long process suits a subject like a trumpet, where the gleam of brass depends on careful painting.
